Founded in 1995 by a group of 12-year-olds, Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education. Today, from the voices and actions of youth, Free The Children has built more than 650 schools and school rooms in developing countries around the world, providing quality primary education to more than 55,000 students every day. Domestically, Free The Children works with young people to develop a generation of active global citizens, empowering them with the tools, resources and confidence they need to change the world.
Holistic Development, Sustainable Change
Adopt a Village is a unique development program implemented by Free The Children in rural and marginalized areas of Kenya, China, Haiti, India, Sierra Leone, Ecuador and Sri Lanka. Designed to meet the basic needs of developing communities and eliminate the obstacles preventing children from accessing education, Adopt a Village is made up of four pillars crucial to lifting communities from poverty: education, alternative income, health care, water and sanitation. These four pillars of community development are all based on the idea that no problem and no solution stands alone. Together, they make up the framework of positive, sustainable change.
